Join this extraordinary journey to Svalbard, Norway aboard the brand new specialized expedition vessel built for these waters. Guiding us through this breathtaking landscape is Martin Gregus, an internationally acclaimed wildlife photographer, filmmaker, and storyteller whose work has graced the pages of National Geographic and earned prestigious awards, including Wildlife Photographer of the Year accolades. Martin possesses an intimate understanding of the Arctic's rhythms and its inhabitants, forged through years of dedicated immersion, including extensive time spent documenting the lives of polar bears.
This expedition offers a rare opportunity to see the Arctic through his unique lens, not just witnessing its beauty but understanding the deeper narratives of survival and adaptation playing out on the ice. His passion lies in capturing unique moments and fostering a connection between viewers and the wild, often highlighting conservation stories through his powerful imagery.
Travelling with an exclusive small group enhances the intimacy and flexibility of our voyage. We adapt our course to the whims of the ice and the movements of wildlife, ensuring every day is driven by discovery. Prepare for the thrill of spotting a distant yellow-white form on the ice, the hushed anticipation as we approach respectfully by Zodiac, and the profound connection forged with one of the planet's most magnificent and remote wildernesses. This is more than a trip; it's an immersion into the realm of the ice bear.
Born and raised in Bratislava, Slovakia, Martin Gregus is an internationally awarded wildlife photographer and cinematographer. Martin’s passion for travel and photography started when he was just 8 years old, having grown up in a household full of artists. He learned everything from his father—also a photographer—before venturing out to document the local wildlife for himself. Martin first traveled around the world through the hundreds of National Geographic magazines found in his home. Now after almost 19 years, he has journeyed to all 7 continents, visiting dozens of countries and some of the planet's most unique ecosystems. His images have received numerous awards, including 2 wins and 2nominations at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition in London, UK.
Currently based in Canada, Martin has worked extensively throughout the Americas, as well as the South Pacific. However, it was his thorough knowledge and experience of the Arctic and Antarctica that earned him world recognition. Among various projects, his work with polar bears—in particular, his expedition 33 Days Among the Bears—has become an international sensation following its coverage in National Geographic magazine in 2022.Since then, Martin has continued his exploration of the polar regions, working on several cinematic projects for Disney, BBC and Netflix
The journey begins
Arrive at Svalbard Airport (LYR) and make your way into town (airport transfers not included 1). In the afternoon, you'll be transferred to the pier to board the impressive MS Kvitungen. Settle into your cabin, meet your fellow adventurers and expedition team, including Martin Gregus, and attend mandatory safety briefings. As we sail out of Isfjorden, marvel at the dramatic landscapes bathed in the perpetual daylight of the Arctic summer.
Exploring the Fjord's
We begin our exploration along Svalbard's stunning west coast. Depending on conditions, we might navigate into fjords like Kongsfjorden, near the scientific settlement of Ny-Ålesund, or Krossfjorden, known for its striking glaciers and bird cliffs. Keep watch for calving glaciers sending ice crashing into the sea, spot colonies of nesting seabirds like kittiwakes and guillemots, and scan the tundra slopes for grazing Svalbard reindeer or the elusive Arctic fox. If conditions are right, we'll launch the Zodiacs for our first intimate exploration cruise.
Realm of the Polar Bear
This is the heart of our expedition. Guided by the latest ice charts and the expertise of our Captain and Expedition Leader, the MS Kvitungen pushes north or east, venturing deep into the pack ice. Leveraging the ship's exceptional "ICE 5" capability, we aim to spend extended time in this dynamic environment – the preferred summer hunting ground of the polar bear.
Days are dedicated to searching for the 'King of the Arctic' as they traverse the ice floes, hunt for seals, or rest near leads in the ice. We utilize the ship's multiple viewing decks and bridge for scanning, and deploy Zodiacs whenever safe and appropriate for closer, yet always respectful, observation.
The silence of the ice is broken only by the cries of seabirds like ivory gulls, the breathing of seals (ringed and bearded seals are common here), or perhaps the blow of a distant whale (minke, fin, or beluga are possible). Martin Gregus will be on deck, sharing his insights into polar bear behaviour, the nuances of the ice environment, and the art of seeing within this vast white world.
Every day is an adventure, dictated by the ever-changing ice and the presence of wildlife.
The search continues
Depending on the extent of the ice and our progress, we may explore the northernmost reaches of the archipelago, potentially aiming for the Seven Islands (Sjuøyane) if conditions permit , or exploring other remote eastern or northern coastlines.
A key objective today, conditions allowing, is to visit known walrus haul-outs.
Witnessing hundreds, sometimes thousands, of these colossal pinnipeds hauled out on beaches or ice floes is an unforgettable Arctic spectacle, offering incredible photographic and observational opportunities.13 We continue scanning for Arctic foxes patrolling the shorelines and diverse birdlife.
Final Encounters
We begin our navigation south, back towards the main island of Spitsbergen and eventually Isfjorden. The journey itself offers continuous opportunities for wildlife sightings – perhaps a pod of beluga whales in a shallow bay, reindeer grazing on surprisingly green tundra, or final glimpses of seabirds against dramatic cliffs.
Enjoy the camaraderie onboard, share stories and photos, and perhaps join Martin and the expedition team for a recap of the incredible journey, reflecting on the unique encounters and the raw beauty of the high Arctic.
Final farewells
This morning, the MS Kvitungen sails back into Longyearbyen's harbour. Enjoy a final breakfast onboard, saying farewell to your guides, crew, and newfound friends. Disembark after breakfast. You are free to make your own way to the airport for onward flights or choose to spend more time exploring Longyearbyen.
“I have had the almost unparalleled privilege to experience iconic wildlife in a way few people have ever had."
This expedition is guided by award-winning wildlife photographer and storyteller Martin Gregus, alongside a team of experienced Svalbard expedition leaders and guides selected for their expertise in Arctic navigation, wildlife, and safety.
A moderate level of fitness is recommended. You should be able to walk moderate distances over potentially uneven terrain during landings (if applicable) and comfortably get in and out of Zodiacs (inflatable boats) from the ship's gangway. Participation in shore excursions or hikes is optional. The primary focus is often ship-based cruising and Zodiac exploration in the ice.
Yes, single occupancy cabins are available subject to availability. We may be able to pair single travelers of the same gender in shared cabins upon request.
Yes. Flights to/from Longyearbyen and accommodation before or after the cruise are not included in the trip price. However, our team can offer general advice on travel logistics to Svalbard. We recommend arriving in Longyearbyen at least one day prior to embarkation to account for potential travel delays.
While not included in the package price, comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for travel to remote Arctic regions. Your policy should cover trip cancellation/interruption, medical expenses, and emergency medical evacuation. Proof of adequate evacuation coverage may be required.
The MS Kvitungen is described as a brand new, dedicated expedition vessel specifically designed and strengthened for navigating polar waters, boasting an "ICE 5" rating. This allows for deeper and longer exploration into the pack ice compared to standard vessels. As a small ship, it offers an intimate atmosphere and allows for greater flexibility in exploring Svalbard's coastline and ice edges.
The primary focus of this expedition is finding Polar Bears in their natural drift ice habitat. Svalbard is also renowned for its populations of Walrus, various Seal species (Ringed, Bearded, Harp), Arctic Fox, Svalbard Reindeer, and potentially whales such as Beluga, Minke, and Fin whales. The archipelago hosts vast colonies of seabirds, including kittiwakes, guillemots, puffins, and Arctic terns. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed but are very likely.
We adhere strictly to wildlife viewing guidelines (like AECO guidelines in the Arctic) to ensure encounters are respectful and do not disturb the animals. Zodiacs allow for closer approaches than the main ship, offering fantastic eye-level perspectives, but always maintaining safe and responsible distances. Your guides prioritize both your safety and the well-being of the wildlife.
July is the height of the Arctic summer in Svalbard. Expect variable conditions: it can be sunny and calm, or overcast, windy, and rainy/snowy, sometimes all in one day! Temperatures typically range between 0°C and 10°C (32°F to 50°F). The key feature is the midnight sun – 24 hours of continuous daylight.
Yes. Layering is crucial. You'll need thermal base layers, insulating mid-layers (fleece or down), and a fully waterproof and windproof outer jacket and trousers. Warm gloves or mittens, a warm hat that covers your ears, warm socks (wool recommended), and sunglasses are essential. Your guides will provide specific recommendations before the trip.
Absolutely not! While you are travelling with one of the world's best wildlife photographers, this expedition is designed for anyone with a passion for wildlife, wilderness, and adventure. Martin Gregus's insights and storytelling enrich the experience for everyone, regardless of their photography skills. Bring whatever camera you're comfortable with – even a smartphone – or simply immerse yourself in the experience with binoculars and your own eyes.
