Tonga with Brooke Pyke: Swim with Humpback Whales

8 Days Trip
Guided trip

The Story

Every year, humpback whales travel thousands of kilometres from Antarctica to the warm waters of Tonga. For one brief window, you can swim alongside them. Join award-winning underwater photographer Brooke Pyke for an intimate week built around one of the planet's most extraordinary wildlife encounters.

Based in Vava'u, we'll head out each day by private boat with one of the region's most experienced whale operators, maximising our time on the water and our chances of meaningful encounters.

Throughout the week, Brooke will guide you through her creative approach to underwater photography; how to move with intention, read the light, and make images that capture not just what you saw, but how it felt.

Beyond the water, we'll explore Vava'u's coastline, from blue caves to remote beaches, and experience the warmth of the local Tongan community.

The Highlights

  • 5 full days swimming with humpback whales up-close on a private boat
  • 7 nights in private waterfront accommodation
  • Internationally recognised professional chef
  • Traditional Tongan welcome feast
  • Explore Vava’u’s blue caves and remote beaches
  • Guided by underwater photographer Brooke Pyke

This is more than a trip.

From in-water encounters with humpback whales to exploring blue caves and secluded beaches, this is an experience shaped by both ocean and culture.

What Fuels Brooke

"Through sharing my imagery, I aspire to contribute to the protection of our planet's last remaining wild places. Join me on this journey to celebrate and safeguard our oceans".

Brooke never planned any of this. She was a graphic design student who was scared of the ocean. One snorkelling trip in Southeast Asia rewired everything. She dropped her studies, became a dive instructor, picked up a camera, and built a career around showing people the beauty hiding just below the surface. That journey, from fear to obsession, is exactly what she brings to every guest: the belief that anyone can fall in love with the ocean if someone shows them how.

Day By Day

Your Itinerary

Day

1

Welcome to Vava'u

A private driver meets you at the airport and takes you to your water-view accommodation - your home for the week, where the ocean is never far from sight.

Lunch is your first chance to meet Brooke and your fellow guests. She'll talk through what brought her to these waters, the moments that shaped her work in marine conservation and underwater photography, and what she's hoping you'll all find together out there. It sets the tone for everything that follows.

The afternoon is yours. Swim, explore the resort, or simply slow down to Vava'u's pace.

At sunset, a traditional Tongan welcome feast. Then Brooke's first masterclass - humpback whale behaviour, how to read it, and how to move in the water with these animals in a way that earns the encounter rather than just taking it.

Day

2

A Tongan Sunday

Sunday belongs to the Kingdom. The island rests, and so do you.

Morning is for the water - not whales yet, just you and your gear. Fins, mask, breathing. Getting comfortable enough that when the moment comes later in the week, instinct takes over and you can actually be present for it.

The afternoon stretches out. Local guide Paluki takes the group to Vava'u's hidden lookouts and beaches, sharing the stories of this place as you go. Church hymns carry across the island on the breeze. It's one of those afternoons that feels like it belongs somewhere else entirely.

Tomorrow, the whale days begin.

Day

3-7

In the Water with Humpbacks

Each day follows a similar rhythm: breakfast, then out to the wharf to board your private vessel for a full day on the water (~7 hours).

The crew scans for spouts, fins, and breaches. When whales are located, Brooke leads you into the water for guided swims - positioning you for the light, watching how the animals move, helping you find the frame. Midday anchor over a coral reef for lunch on board, with time to explore nearby blue caves and white-sand beaches. Afternoons back at the resort - freshwater caves, local markets, or a drink at sunset. Group dinner each evening prepared by the chef.

The whales are wild. Some days you'll have long, close encounters. Some days take more patience. That's what makes it real.

Day

8

Last Morning, Lasting Images

The boats stay at the dock today.

After breakfast, Brooke leads a hands-on editing masterclass - working through the images you made together over the week. What the light was doing. Why one frame works and another almost does. How to finish what you started in the water.

It's a quieter kind of magic than Days 3-7, but it's magic all the same. You'll leave with more than a hard drive full of images - you'll know what you were looking for, and how to find it again.

“Thanking the stars I found Airguides trip. We were totally taken care of! Paul answered all our questions and took care of the details so all we had to do was get there. An amazing, talented photographer who created a special group experience. The WHALES were mind blowing. What a gift to be in Tonga staring into the eye of a baby whale! This trip was a lifelong dream come true. I highly recommend it so much we’ve already signed up again for next year!"

Is swimming with humpback whales safe and ethical?

Swimming with humpback whales has operated in Tonga for over 20 years with a strong safety record. Every swim is managed by experienced local guides who read the whales' behaviour and make the call on when and how to enter the water. As with any wildlife encounter in open water, there is an inherent level of risk - but your safety is always the priority.

On the ethical side, Tonga operates under strict government-regulated guidelines designed to put the whale's comfort first. Interactions only happen when whales approach voluntarily - nothing is forced. When humpbacks are at ease, they actively seek out human company out of curiosity. Airguides works exclusively with operators who follow these guidelines, and Brooke's years of experience as a wildlife photographer and advocate means every encounter is approached with genuine respect for the animals and the environment.

Do I need diving experience?

No. This is a snorkelling experience. Humpbacks surface to breathe, and that's where the best interactions happen.

What is Vava'u like?

Vava'u is a small, community-oriented island in the north of Tonga, surrounded by clear warm water with a lush, green interior. It's relatively low-key - think local restaurants and cafes, a bakery, pharmacy, ATMs and 4G signal. Everything you need is there, just without the resort-style infrastructure of more developed destinations. The community is warm and welcoming, and supporting local operators here genuinely matters - the island is still recovering from the 2022 volcanic eruption and the impact of closed borders during the pandemic.

Who leads the trip?

Every Airguides expedition has two leaders: an Airguides trip leader who handles logistics and keeps everything running smoothly, and a storyteller guide - in this case Brooke Pyke - who brings deep expertise, stories and perspective to every experience.

What fitness level is required?

Moderate. You need to be comfortable in the ocean, as water activities can last several hours. If you have any concerns, contact us before booking.

Who will I be travelling with?

Airguides trips are small group expeditions, typically 6 to 12 guests. You'll travel alongside an Airguides trip leader, Brooke Pyke, and a group of like-minded people - solo travellers, couples, and friends drawn together by curiosity and a love of the natural world. Most trips are for guests 18 and over, though exceptions can be made for confident swimmers on a case-by-case basis. Get in touch if you're unsure.

Is there a single supplement for solo travellers?

Yes. Solo travellers can request a private room for an additional fee. We also offer a roommate pairing option on a limited, first-come-first-served basis. Contact us for details and availability.

Can I speak to someone about this trip or get help with flights?

Yes. Our team can help with flight options and travel routing. Call, text or WhatsApp us at +61 402 552 918. You'll speak directly with an Airguides team member who knows this trip inside out. We’re here to help with any questions, big or small, from planning your adventure to arriving back home.

A truly unique experience that you will cherish for the rest of your life.

This experience is not for the faint of heart or someone who is looking for Instagram moments for clout. You are being given a unique opportunity to go to a place that will only be accessible to a handful of mere mortals.

To be in the presence of a unique visionary like Martin Gregus is truly a once in a lifetime.

Anne Prather, Fireweeds 2025

The Airguides trip to Tonga to swim with humpback whales was the experience of a lifetime. I have traveled all over the world, and nothing compares to being in the wild, rustic, deep blue waters of the South Pacific while interacting with whales and their calves. A wonderful and caring team made our adventures stress free.
