Sailing Antarctica: Orca Seal Hunt

38-Day Trip

The Story

Join photographer Martin Gregus for an expedition to Antarctica, one of the most remote and least visited regions on Earth. Over 19 years, Martin has travelled to all seven continents and some of the planet's most extreme ecosystems. His work has contributed to cinematic projects for Disney, BBC and Netflix. Antarctica is where his photography found its edge, and this expedition is built around sharing that environment with a small group willing to go where most never will.

This journey is designed for those seeking an authentic way to experience the continent. Travelling aboard a 19-metre steel sailing vessel, we depart from Patagonia and cross the Drake Passage before spending five weeks exploring Antarctica's coastline, wildlife, and shifting ice landscapes. With a smaller vessel, we access areas rarely reached by larger ships, while operating with a low-impact, environmentally conscious approach.

The focus of the expedition is to spend extended time in the field, with the aim of photographing orcas hunting Weddell seals. Along the way, we may also encounter leopard seals, penguin colonies, humpback whales, and other Antarctic wildlife, depending on conditions.

Our permits allow us to land on mainland Antarctica, opening opportunities for activities such as snowshoeing, camping, and cross-country skiing, experiences not typically possible on larger vessels.

Throughout the journey, Martin and your expedition leader will lead photography sessions, masterclasses, and informal talks, sharing insight into both the technical and observational aspects of working in such an extreme environment. Five weeks. One of the last truly wild places. Very few people will ever do this.

The Highlights

Why Travel With Martin?

Martin Gregus grew up in Bratislava, Slovakia, in a household full of artists. He learned photography from his father and was exploring local wildlife with a camera before most kids had decided what they wanted to do with their lives. The hundreds of National Geographic magazines stacked around his home did the rest.

Nineteen years later, his work has taken him across all seven continents and some of the most remote ecosystems on the planet. He has earned two wins and two nominations at Wildlife Photographer of the Year, and his 2022 polar bear project, 33 Days Among the Bears, became an international story after National Geographic coverage. His cinematography has since contributed to productions for Disney, BBC, and Netflix.

Now based in Canada, Martin is recognised internationally for his work in polar regions and remote wilderness, and for his ability to create extraordinary images in some of the most extreme environments on earth.

What Sets Martin Apart
  • Nearly two decades of expedition work across the planet's most extreme environments: Arctic, Antarctic, Patagonia, and the Himalayas
  • A network of expert local guides and trackers in each destination, built over years of repeat fieldwork, giving guests access that cannot be replicated
  • Technical mastery developed in the harshest conditions on earth: polar ice, high altitude, dense wilderness, and open ocean
  • A teaching approach grounded in patience and preparation, with a belief that the best wildlife images are earned, not stumbled upon

What Fuels Martin

"When you're standing on polar ice at sunrise, you don't need convincing that this planet is worth protecting."

It started in a living room in Slovakia, surrounded by his father's photographs and stacks of National Geographic. That childhood wonder never faded. It grew into a drive to reach the most remote corners of the planet and bring back images that make people care. For Martin, every expedition carries a purpose: show people what's out there, so they want to protect it.

Is it possible to fly over Drake Passage?

Yes. Charter flights can be arranged one-way or return to avoid sailing Drake's Passage, at approximately US$5,000 each way. The trip is also scheduled so that guests who sail both ways can be home for Christmas. Get in touch and we can walk you through the options.

What meals will be served on board?

Meals have a home-cooked feel with a varied menu throughout the trip. The boat carries a large freezer, and in the cold Antarctic conditions fresh fruit and vegetables keep well for the full duration. If you have dietary restrictions or allergies, get in touch before the trip and the crew will do their best to accommodate you.

Who is this trip designed for?

Adventure travellers with a serious appetite for the wild and remote. Every effort is made for guest comfort aboard the boat, but this is an expedition - not a resort. The conditions are real, the sailing is real, and the access you get in return is extraordinary. We strongly recommend speaking with our team before booking to make sure the trip is the right fit for you.

Can I speak to someone about this trip or get help with flights?

Yes. Our team can help with flight options and travel routing. Call, text or WhatsApp us at +61 402 552 918. You'll speak directly with an Airguides team member who knows this trip inside out. We're here to help with any questions, big or small, from planning your adventure to arriving back home.

A truly unique experience that you will cherish for the rest of your life.

This experience is not for the faint of heart or someone who is looking for Instagram moments for clout. You are being given a unique opportunity to go to a place that will only be accessible to a handful of mere mortals.

To be in the presence of a unique visionary like Martin Gregus is truly a once in a lifetime.

The Airguides trip to Tonga to swim with humpback whales was the experience of a lifetime. I have traveled all over the world, and nothing compares to being in the wild, rustic, deep blue waters of the South Pacific while interacting with whales and their calves. A wonderful and caring team made our adventures stress free.
