Trip Overview

Kaikoura

Kaikoura

NZ's most abundant sea life can all be found here - encounter a variety of whale species in their natural environment, swim with the dolphins, walk on the coastal walkway amongst the seals, and capture this all with an amazing backdrop that includes both mountains and sea. Allow 2 days here for a better chance to go Whale Watching (as it is weather dependent!)

Activities

Whale Watch Kaikoura

Whale Watch Kaikoura
Kaikoura is one of the only places is in the world you can experience such an abundance of wildlife. This is because of the Kaikoura Canyon - a deep offshore ocean trench that is brimming with rich nutrients for
feeding. Seeing such a variety of sea life in its own natural environment is a rare privilege and on any given day you might see several whale species (sperm, humpback or orca), dolphins and native NZ bird life.
Ohau Seal Colony
do
Ohau Seal Colony
This is an awesome opportunity to see NZ fur seals up close in their natural environment from the newly re-opened lookout on SH1 - the whole areas was closed for two years due to the Kaikoura earthquake in 2016
but it is heartwarming to see the seals have returned in full force and you can observe seals of all shapes, ages and sizes playing happily amongst the rocks.

Hislops Wholefood Cafe
Hislops Wholefoods Cafe serves up a hearty and wholesome menu which really sets you up with a great start to the day when you're heading off to explore the region. I loved it so much I ate breakfast here two days
running!
Puhi Puhi DOC campsite

Puhi Puhi DOC campsite
Camping a night in this scenic reserve is the perfect base to explore the surf beach of Mangamaunu and the Seal Colony at Ohau Point just down the road. The opportunity to capture sunrise on the rocky shores of
Maungamaunu or make like a local and surf the first golden light shouldn't be missed! Puhi Puhi Scenic Reserve is included in the DOC weekly campsite pass.
